Report on Recent Advanced Handgun Class

On Saturday September 27th The Cedarville Marksmanship Club hosted its second Advanced Handgun/Active Shooter class. There were eight participants this year for the 10 hour class. The course was taught by Lon Etchison, fire arms instructor and detective with the Xenia Police Department. The day began with 5 hours of live fire instruction and drills covering such skill as placing multiple rounds on target rapidly and accurately, defensive shooting up close and personal, shooting while moving, and finally a chance to experience shooting from distances up to 75 feet from the target. Following a quick lunch break, the group reconvened at a local area church to experience force-on-force training inside the local church building.

The force-on-force training involved expert instruction on the clearing of halls, alcoves and rooms in the building without presenting oneself as a target to the “bad guys” assumed to be inside. The training experience then took a turn towards the ultra realistic. With the help of a group of volunteers to play the roll of victims and “bad guy”, and using airsoft training pistols, each participant had the opportunity to experience a real life situation in which an evil person was threatening innocent people with great bodily harm, or worse. Each participant had to react to the sound of gunshots (blanks), the screams and scattered bodies of wounded victims (the volunteer actors), to locate the “bad guy” (volunteer actor) and put an end to their evil deeds without getting shot themselves. As always, safety was the top priority and all involved wore appropriate face and ear protection.

We all hope and pray that this type of training will never be needed, but as the axiom goes… “it’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it”. Any expert will tell you… train, train, train! Take as many classes as your time and budget will allow.

Here is what a few of the participants had to say on their evaluation forms about this course;

“. . .great class. . .”  (Matt)
” . . .small class size was just right – very helpful. . .” (Jim)
“. . .excellent, beneficial information. . .”  (Darren)
“. . .a great class. . .informative and ideas of how to improve at home. . .’ (Miranda)

We are planning to host yet another class in the Spring of 2015, so if you’re interested, check back here often for more information. Additionally, I just learned today that Lon would like to possibly schedule a refresher course for those who have  already taken this class. It will most likely be sometime this winter and would be a half day of more force-on-force scenarios.
There’s no doubt, this type of training is extremely valuable for any concealed carry permit holder who is concerned about protecting loved ones and others in public setting or wherever evil presents itself. We don’t get to choose the time or place, that’s the prerogative of the “Bad Guy”. We however, do not have to cower in a corner or hope to depend on the “benevolent mercy” of the armed intruder.

Advanced Notice for our Advanced Handgun Training Class

On Saturday September 27th, the Cedarville Marksmanship Club will host its second Advanced Handgun class. The first class of this kind was held back on April 27 of 2013 with 11 people participating. This is a 10-hour course that focuses on advanced carry-conceal and active shooter response. The class is open to anyone who currently holds a Concealed Handgun License. Upon completion of this course you will be better prepare you to handle a real life situation in which you may have to use your handgun to defend your life or the lives of your loved ones. Lon Etchison and Fred Barker, two seasoned Xenia police training officers, teach the course.

The morning begins with three to four hours of live fire on the range. This is not just punching holes in paper, but rather, coached and supervised drills. These drills are designed to make you better at, and more confident in, drawing your firearm from concealment and placing hits on target as quickly as possible. Moving while placing rounds on target and reloading may be necessary.

After a quick lunch break, the group reconvenes at a local church building to learn and practice tactics of clearing a building, room by room, given the scenario that a “bad guy” is present and perpetrating evil. These “force-on-force” drills at the church are performed using airsoft pistols, which are extremely realistic replicas of the handgun they represent. Even the action operates in recoil, just as their “real” counterpart firearm does. This gives a very safe, yet extremely realistic training experience. A debriefing session follows each drill to discuss what you did right and, well…, lets just say what you could have done differently. I guarantee, these drills will challenge you!

If you choose to participate in this day of training, I am convinced you will leave much better equipped and much more confident in your preparedness to handle a situation in which you are forced to use your handgun. How can I say that, you may ask. Well, I am one of the 11 individuals that participated in the first class and I can say without reservation that this class has been, by far, the best class I have ever taken concerning firearms. It was also the best use for 200 rounds of .45 ACP that I could ever have thought of.

Additional details will be forthcoming. Check back here for registration information as it becomes available. Class size is limited, so if you are interested in this awesome opportunity to acquire some great training locally, be prepared to register when the time to do so is here.

Tactical Shoot Canceled

Well I think that maybe I have been bragging a little too much about our warm environment in which to shoot this winter. It has been a brutally cold winter outside that much is true, unfortunatly it is almost as cold inside at the range in Springfield right now. It seems that the heating system for Range B is out of commission. Rather than brave the cold, we’ve decided to postpone the tactical shoot for another time. We appoligize for having to cancel on such short notice but look at the bright side, this will give you a little extra time to practice those speed reloads.

Check back here for updates on when we reschedule the Tactical Shoot.

Winter 2014 – Tactical Shoot

Thursday evening, February 13, The Cedarville Marksmanship Club, in association with the Miami Valley Shooting Grounds will host another tactical shoot. Joe Mills, an 18 year veteran of the Federal Marshall’s Service will be our facilitator for the event.

At last year’s tactical shoot 14 members and friends participated in a fun and exciting evening.  This event will be a good, safe environment to test your skills under simulated pressure of a real life threat. If you would like to add a bit more reality, let Joe or another club member load your magazine for you with a number of rounds unknown to you. Then, if or when (and I suspect it will be when) you shoot to “slide-lock” during the course, a “surprise” yet realistic reload will be necessary to continue the course.  Can you think of a better situation to practice this skill that may someday save your life or the life of a loved one?  After all, as the saying goes, “when under the stress of a life or death situation you will only do what you have trained to do”.

Please join us for this unique opportunity. I promise you it will be a good time!

Regular lanes for target shooting will also be available.  We look forward to seeing you there!
